Band
The SMS Spartan Band is under the direction of Mr. Blake Bodie. The band consists of over 150 6th,7th and 8th graders, and is growing every year! The SMS Band consistently strives for success with students performing annually at regional assessments as well as State and regional Honor Bands. The band is currently made up of four ensembles.
Beginning Band (All grades, no experience needed)
Intermediate Band (One year of beginning band)
Advanced Band (Two years of being in the band program or audition)
Jazz Band (One year or beginning band exc. Piano and bass)
The philosophy of the Saraland Middle School Spartan Band is to provide a quality music and performance in art education for the students of Saraland Middle School. The Spartan Band will provide opportunities for its students to learn valuable life skills, citizenship, ambassadorship, leadership, teamwork, dedication, selflessness, and perseverance. Music education is a vital part of becoming an educated person and preparing for life. We teach creative and critical thinking, problem solving, and individual responsibility every day. These lessons are inherent in every music class and these skills will benefit these students as they continue their educational career. Also, students learn interpersonal skills and the ability to motivate and influence a group to work together toward a common goal for their common good.
Not only does the SMS Spartan Band perform in concerts every year, but the Advanced Band also performs at pep rallies and football games throughout the Fall.
